Survivor Story: Brian Pochel
11/13/2009
I was 38 years old when I was diagnosed with locally advanced pancreatic cancer. My wife, Sheryl, and I have four kids. Our oldest had just turned six that month and our youngest was ten months old. I was told, "A year, probably not two" for my survival. We were told the chances of me making it to surgery were slim, because my tumor was completely wrapped around my portal vein, superior mesenteric vein and over 50% around my superior mesenteric artery. We were devastated. It took eight months of therapy, but I made it to the Whipple.

At the time of my surgery, there was NO cancer found. None. It was an amazing time. Unfortunately, as is the nature of this cancer, it didn't last. On a routine scan in March of 2008, a spot on my lung was found. A PET scan revealed cancer in the lymph nodes under my left collar bone. In April of 2008, I had another scan and they found a brain tumor! Since then, I have had two surgeries: one to remove the brain tumor and one to remove lymph nodes in my neck. I’ve also had radiation treatments to both areas.

I have been off of chemotherapy for a year now, but the lymph nodes in my neck are becoming more active and there are three spots on my lungs that we have been watching. It is once again time for me to start some treatment. I wanted to share my story because even though things have not been easy, at least I am still here to complain about it! I work at my clinic (I am a chiropractor) and I spend time with my family. I am still able to enjoy the things I like to do, like camping, hunting and riding my bike. There is hope!
