Editor’s Note: This year, PanCAN introduced PanCAN City Sponsorship, a brand-new opportunity offering broader engagement and recognition plus year-round collaboration with our local Affiliates. PanCAN City Sponsorship includes our signature events like PanCAN PurpleStride and Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month as well as social media visibility and recognition in community and Affiliate activities.
We are grateful for our very first PanCAN City Sponsor – a combined partnership between the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Nebraska Medicine! UNMC and Nebraska Medicine have been involved with PanCAN PurpleStride since 2011 and we’re excited to expand our Nebraska Affiliate partnership through our PanCAN City Sponsorship.
As the very first PanCAN City Sponsor, UNMC and Nebraska Medicine share PanCAN’s mission to improve the lives of everyone impacted by pancreatic cancer.
“One of the most impactful elements of PurpleStride is the sense of community the event promotes,” said Sunil R. Hingorani, MD, PhD, Director, Pancreatic Cancer Center of Excellence at UNMC. “It is truly remarkable to see a varied and diverse group of people come together for the common goals of honoring their loved ones, supporting those who are fighting, and celebrating those who have survived.”
Dr. Hingorani received one of PanCAN’s first career development awards almost 20 years ago and has served on its Scientific and Medical Advisory Board for over 10 years. Like PanCAN’s founders, he too lost a loved one to this terrible disease. “We are proud to partner with an organization that shares the same goals and motivations as we do in raising the standard of care for pancreatic cancer patients and leading the search for tomorrow’s cures,” he said.
UNMC/Nebraska Medicine
Founded in 1869, UNMC was chartered in 1881 as the state’s first medical college. The academic medical center has grown to encompass six colleges, two degree-granting institutes and a graduate college, serving students on five campuses across Nebraska and online.
Nebraska Medicine includes Nebraska Medicine – Nebraska Medical Center, Nebraska Medicine – Bellevue and 40 outpatient clinics, providing patients with access to more than 1,000 physicians and 809-licensed hospital beds in Omaha and Bellevue. Nebraska Medicine is the primary clinical teaching partner for UNMC, which allows patients to benefit from one of the nation’s leaders in leading-edge research and education.
The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center at Nebraska Medical Center opened in 2017 with state-of-the-art spaces for research and delivery of clinical care. This 10-story building has 108 in-patient beds and research space for 96 investigators. Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Nebraska. The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center also houses the Pancreatic Cancer Center of Excellence, a unique public-private partnership dedicated to ending suffering from pancreatic cancer.
The combined state-of-the-art facilities of UNMC, Nebraska Medicine and the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center enable students, researchers and physicians to work and study in a technologically enhanced research environment.
As PanCAN’s first City Sponsor, PanCAN’s commitment to fighting pancreatic cancer on many fronts resonates deeply within the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community.
“PanCAN is the leading patient-advocacy and research supporter for pancreatic cancer in the country,” said Dr. Hingorani. “The organization was founded by those who lost loved ones to this disease. We share that unwavering commitment and are proud to partner with an organization who directly supports our patients and research.”
