For months, David Herman experienced mild fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort and some weight loss – symptoms he’d rationalize away due to his busy schedule as a dad, partner and school principal. Although David could ignore what was happening, a good friend refused to and urged him to go to a doctor. He’s glad he did.

After bloodwork and scans, David was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer. The news, understandably, was life changing – he’s been in active treatment ever since.

“I’m showing up, managing the side effects of treatment and staying disciplined about what matters most to me. I’m focused on my quality of life, spending my time intentionally and moving forward through this journey with purpose, not fear,” says David.

Early in this journey, David connected with PanCAN Patient Services. He says PanCAN became a lifeline.

“My experience with them was human and action oriented. No fluff – just clear information, real support and consistent follow-through, which was especially important during a time when uncertainty was high and decisions mattered. Patient Services helped bring structure to the chaos.”

When David was looking for a clinical trial he could enroll in, he once again turned to PanCAN and our Clinical Trial Finder. He found the database practical and empowering; rather than leaving him overwhelmed, he appreciated the simplicity of the information.

“The Clinical Trial Finder gave me options at a moment when options mattered the most. Access to real data, viable pathways and informed choices restored control in my life at a time when my cancer tried to take it,” he shares.

To give back to the place that gave him so much, David participates in PanCAN PurpleStride New Jersey with team Principal Herman’s Heroes. Last year they raised nearly $27,000 to support PanCAN research and programs like Patient Services. They’ve set another ambitious fundraising goal this year. His Aunt Gail serves as Team Captain.

“PurpleStride is power in motion. It’s community with purpose – survivors, caregivers, families and allies moving together. What stands out most is the energy there. No pity. Just strength, visibility and collective resolve.”

Another way David gives back is through a T-shirt line with his son called Leader. Ten dollars of every purchase goes to PanCAN. He says the company is built on identity, resilience and impact, with the goal of inspiring those young and older to be a leader in their community.

“Partnering with PanCAN wasn’t optional, it was a responsibility. They’re in the trenches doing real work every day. If I’m building something, it has to move the mission forward, not just grow a brand.”

David has spent his life being a leader, a characteristic that helped him throughout his cancer journey.

“Leadership doesn’t pause for a diagnosis. I approach treatment the same way I led my career: ask hard questions, build the right team, stay informed and move forward even when the terrain is brutal. Cancer doesn’t redefine leadership. It tests it.”

During the most trying times, David has a strong support system there for him. His family, friends, colleagues and community are there for him. At the center of that support is the love of his life, Melissa, and four children who stand tall in the face of this disease – his two sons Reagan and Spencer, and Melissa’s daughters Bella and Angie. Their message to the cancer affecting their father: “not today or tomorrow are you taking him from us.” They are his anchor, his reason and the force that keeps him moving forward when the weight of this disease is at its heaviest.

“This diagnosis doesn’t hit one person; it impacts everyone who stands with you. My loved ones have carried the weight alongside me, and it’s forged something deeper. We’re more unified, more honest and more present than ever. It’s defined as true love.”

David’s advice for newly diagnosed is raw and honest.

“This is hard. There’s no way around that. You’re going to face fear, fatigue and days that test your resolve. Don’t waste energy pretending otherwise. Get informed. Build a team you trust. Advocate for yourself relentlessly. Show up even when motivation is gone – discipline will carry you when emotion won’t. Take the help. Control what you can. Keep moving forward. This fight isn’t about being fearless. It’s about staying in it.”
